Crises averted!

One of the things that happens to you when you have at least one autistic child is that your senses seem to step up a gear. You can smell trouble at 100 paces if not further and you develop bat ears for the wrong kind of noise.

Today it was all quiet, in a good way, so I decided to take a moment to myself and catchup on a couple of emails etc. All was well but then I smelled it. The unmistakeable smell of toothpaste. I sped to Bear (aka prime suspect) and found the cutest thing so far this holiday. She had found the toothpaste all right but bless her cotton socks she had only got the veg brush and put a wee bit on it and was sat in the sunroom brushing her teeth! I scanned as only autism mums can but there was no trace of the tube - off to the bedroom with dread in my step - still no toothpaste. Mystified I went back to the kitchen regrouping my thoughts along the way and found she had put the tube back on the windowsill with the top on. See, she can be good!

Subtext lesson of this story? Don't forget what you put in a temporary safe place when you're unpacking the shopping!

She may be a step ahead of me now. I must have inadvertantly changed my morning routine at some point, because I've been close to forgetting to brush before I leave my apartment a couple of times in the last few weeks. My anxiety is soaring that this once unconscious chore is suddenly easy to neglect.

It is funny how we respond to smells completely and instantly. The smell of permanent markers can send me into an all out panic.

Robin - you actually have permanent markers in the house??

Oh yes! And that is why we buy fluoride free toothpaste. The veggie brush? LOL! At least it wasn't the broom!

(PS) I have our Sharpies (permanent Markers) in our safe deposit box at the bank......

Hope Bonnie Prince, er, Prince, er, The Queen's hubby is OK. Edward? No. Charles? Of course not. Oh yes - Philip. I hope Bonnie Prince Philip is OK. Maybe the Lord could take George Bush instead?

Kim the old coot is doing fine and left hospital today. As for Bush...he'll be gone soon and some would say not soon enough. Of course others might ask how he managed a second term in the first place?!

Amanda, I am glad to meet you, the mother to your outstanding girls. I have a great-grandson with autism, and wish so much that my granddaughter could have a support group of other moms with whom to talk. Matthew will be 5 on July 3rd, does not talk, and is still in diapers. His therapist is teaching him sign language, but not to the family, and this adds to his frustration. I have an entry in my blog about them. They are in Ohio, I am in Arkansas. It has been two years since I have seen them. Here is a picture of Matthew. http://tinyurl.com/6of6uf At one time they thought he had Fragile X (I think that's right) but the geneticist finally ruled that out.

My granddaughter will be 27 in May and is also expecting her 3rd baby then, There will be no more following this birth. *s*

Best wishes
Ragdoll Billie

I have one black sharpie, hidden on a high shelf in the kitchen. What can I say, I live for danger...

And how else do I even have a prayer something will make it home from school unless I scribble names all over it.
